The National Orchid Garden is located on the highest hill in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Three hectares of carefully landscaped slopes provide a setting for over 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids, with about 600 species and hybrids on display. The distinctive feature of the National Orchid Garden not to be missed is its design concept which presents the display of plants in four separate color zones over most of its areas: “spring” zone with its prevailing colors of bright and lively shades of gold, yellow and creams “summer” zone with its major tones of strong reds and pinks “autumn” zone of matured shades “winter” zone of whites and cool violet shades This colour zoning is achieved by a careful blend of selected trees, shrubs, herbs and orchids (mostly hybrids) with matching foliage and floral colours. The National Orchid Garden was opened on 20 October 1995 by Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

THE SEMBCORP cool house

The Cool House is an indoor orchid collection of the five vegetation – Malesia, Continental Southeast Asia and South Asia, Australasia, Afrotropics and Neotropics. The 260 square meters of the house are designed to stimulate the high elevation montane forest with an altitude of  1000 to 2000 meters. Visitors will be able to experience and look at rare orchids found in this altitude such as Cymbidiums (also known as Boat Orchids), Dendrochilums (also known as Chain Orchids), Cyrtochilums and Phragmipedium (also known as Slipper Orchids).

VIP ORCHIDS

The VIP Orchid Garden was thoughtfully sited and carefully styled as an English backyard garden of Burkill Hall. Displayed here are the outstanding orchid hybrids of the Gardens’ orchid programme that was initiated by Professor Eric Holttum (the Gardens’ third director) in 1928. As Singapore orchids gained fame, it became obvious that they should be used as agents to promote goodwill and foster closer ties between nations. From 1957 the Singapore Government began to honour State Visitors and other VIPs by naming selected orchid hybrids after them. This prized
collection of “VIP Orchids” has become an important attraction of the National Orchid Garden. To date, the Gardens has named over 120 VIP orchids. The first VIP orchid was Aranthera Anne Black in 1956, after Lady Black, wife of a former Governor of Singapore, Sir Robert Black. Other examples of VIP orchids on display include Dendrobium Margaret Thatcher, Renantanda Akihito, Dendrobium Masako Kotaishi Hidenka, Dendrobium Elizabeth, Paravanda Nelson Mandela, Mokara Laura Bush and Renantanda Kofi Anan.
